In response to the US steel trade sanctions initiated by the US, the EU held a hearing on September 13th, including a number of domestic stainless steel companies such as Yieh United Steel Corp., Walsin, Tang Eng, etc., to strive for the best conditions for exporting Europe and defend the domestic stainless steel industry.
After the US 232 investigation, Taiwan did not turn the sales of steel in the US to the EU, and did not have an impact on the European market. At this hearing, mills hope to exclude import restrictions, in addition to requesting the termination of steel product defense measures, also demanded that Taiwan should be given quotas, while implementing the pre-import registration system to reduce Taiwan’s competitive disadvantages due to transportation.
According to the EU announcement, the quota was based on the import situation in the past three years, and it was “first-come-first-served”. Imported steel products exceeding the quota will be subject to a 25% tariff.
