European automakers oppose EU steel protection measures- The 20th China (Guangzhou) Int’l Plate metal, Bar, wire, Metal Processing &Setting Equipment Exhibition

The European Automobile Manufacturers'' Association (ACEA) issued a statement that the import protection measures announced before annual holiday did not take into account the needs of automotive industry, and will affect the competitiveness. Therefore, the ACEA strongly opposed against this measure.
Since the annual production of European cars has increased to 5 million units in 2014, and EU''s automobile production has grown rapidly in 2017 to early 2018. Market demand of galvanized steel for vehicles has exceeded EU capacity, leading to a rise in European prices.
In this regard, the ACEA questioned the necessity of protection measures. EU steel capacity was still tight, and the demand for imported steel was an essential method for automotive industry. However, due to slowdown in demand of automotive industry recently, supply condition was improved, and import quota has kept steel prices stable at high level.
On the other hand, EU steel manufacturers were profiting from long-term high prices, and capacity utilization was excellent. From 2018 financial statements, current situation was very beneficial to European steel manufacturers.
