Ohio senators urge Commerce Department to move quickly on steel dumping probe-The 19th Guangzhou Die-casting, Foundry & Industry Furnace Exhibition

cleveland.com reported that Ohio''s US senators are asking Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to act quickly on a pending investigation of whether imported steel threatens US national security. Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman say that foreign steelmakers accelerated their flooding of U.S. markets while the investigation is pending to maximize exports before any sanctions are imposed.
The senators wrote in a letter to Ross “We urge you to complete your investigation and publish your final report with conclusions and recommendations as quickly as possible to prevent further damage to the US steel sector.”
Brown and Portman say steel imports to the United States rose 25 percent in the first half of 2017 over the first half of the previous year, with particular spikes in rebar, oil country tubular goods, and grain oriented steel.
They wrote "These import levels are unsustainable for U.S. companies and their workers. Unfortunately, the steel sector expects them to continue to increase unless a conclusion of the Section 232 investigation is reached immediately."
The Commerce Department launched an investigation of foreign steel dumping in April under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which gives presidents broad power to adjust imports and impose tariffs if excessive foreign imports are found to be a threat to US national security.
