U.S. Steel restarts electric furnace construction-The 20th China(Guangzhou) Die-casting, Foundry & Industry Furnace Exhibition

U.S. Steel Corp. recently announced that it will restart the electric furnace construction at Fairfield steel tube plant in Alabama. The electric furnace project began in March 2015, but it was shut down after 9 months of construction, which was mainly because of declined demand for steel pipes in US oil and gas industry, and the surge in the number of imported steel pipes has led to serious competition and falling prices.
The investment project was about US$215 million, including an electric furnace with annual capacity of 1.6 million short tons, and the upgrade of continuous casting line. It was expected to be put into production in the second half of next year.
U.S. Steel will adopt new technology to increase added value and its competitiveness in the US market. Owing to the development of US'' shale oil and the rise of global crude oil prices, market demand for oil pipes has increased gradually.
Besides, the US'' trade protection measures have also restricted against particular steel imports, thereby increasing market share of US'' steel mills.
